How do I get started? / How do I learn more about ClimateTalk™

To obtain the specification for ClimateTalk™, go to the Specification tab. Fill in the requested information which will submit your request electronically. A copy of the protocol specification will be sent out for your review.

What is the physical layer?

ClimateTalk™ is based on EIA RS-485.

What are ClimateTalk™ profiles?

Profiles are groups of messages developed for specific applications. For instance, there is a motor profile which refers to communications between a variable speed motor and a furnace ignition module.

Is ClimateTalk™ limited only to HVAC equipment? Can it be used with other systems?

ClimateTalk™ certainly can be used with systems other than HVAC. It was originally focused on residential HVAC, but ClimateTalk™ message sets can be expanded to accommodate many other control applications, and that easy adaptability is one of the protocol's strengths. So, if a user comes up with a new functionality for which communication is required, new profiles can be created and added to the standard. This is not only expected, it is encouraged.
